9 Things You Need to Know about the Cebu Leg of Miss Universe 2016
Last November 3, 2016, after months of speculations and rumors, the Miss Universe Organization officially announced that the Philippines will be hosting the Miss Universe 2016 pageant. Fresh from Pia Wurztbach’s success during the pageant’s 64th edition, Filipino fans from all corners of the world are ecstatic that the pageant is finally returning to the country after 22 long years.
The beginning of the Miss Universe pageant was officially marked by a kick-off party which was held at Conrad Hotel in Pasay City on December 9, 2016. Following the kick-off event, several other events were scheduled to take place in various parts of the country. One of these events was the ocular inspection in Oslob on December 13, 2016 with five candidates.
On January 17, the 86 official candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant will fly to Cebu to participate in a series of major and ancillary activities.
Here is a list of the exciting activities lined up for the prestigious pageant’s Cebu stop:
1. Arrival of Candidates
The candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant will arrive in Cebu in the early morning of January 17, 2017. They will arrive in batches and they will be welcomed by the Governor of the Province of Cebu Hon. Hilario Davide III. They will also be welcomed at the airport by the Sinulog Dancers of Cebu.

3. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach
The reigning Miss Universe 2015 Ms. Pia Alonzo Wurstbach will be coming to Cebu to not only support this year’s candidates but also to hand over the crown to the new Miss Universe. She will also be attending several events including a short meet-and-greet with fans and guests.
4. Swimsuit Presentation
On January 14, the candidates will all be in Cebu for the Swimsuit Presentation — the pageant’s first major preliminary competition. During the event, major sponsor Flawless Face and Body Clinic will award the Flawless of the Universe title to one lucky candidate. The winner will receive a sash and a thousand US dollars.
5. Sinulog Festive Lunch
For lunch, the candidates and the entire Miss Universe entourage will be treated to a cultural spectacle. Featuring the Dancesport Team of Cebu City, the short presentation will feature Cebu’s very own world-famous Sinulog Festival. The festive lunch will be hosted by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
6. Site Visit with Event Sponsors
After lunch, the candidates will be leaving the resort for various photo shoots and engagements with event sponsors. They will be visiting the Converse store at SM Seaside City Cebu for a shoe-signing event as well as the Uniqlo store (still in SM Seaside City Cebu) for a fashion event and a meet-and-greet.
7. Dinner and Fashion Gala
In the evening, the candidates will join the Dinner and Fashion Gala hosted by Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza. The event will feature creations by renowned Filipino designer Cary Santiago. The show will also feature the works of the country’s Top 20 fashion designers.
8. Havana DJ Party
After the Dinner and Fashion Gala, the candidates will have plenty of time to mingle with guests and friends at the Havana DJ Party. The event, which is hosted by Mandaue City Mayor Luigi Quisumbing, will feature performances by 4 top international DJs. It will be held near the Coral Seaside Restaurant.
9. Cellphone Signal Shutdown
For the safety of all candidates and attending guests, cell sites in various parts of Lapu-Lapu City will be shut down during the event. This means that mobile devices won’t be able to make and receive calls from January 17 to January 18. The areas and waters surrounding the resort will also be considered no-fly and no-sail zones, respectively.
