Bunnychon (Rabbit Lechon) is Now in Cebu!

Looking for a unique dining experience? Tired of the usual fare you see in food parks, food halls, and food courts? Do you want to try something you’ve (most probably) never tried before? If your answer to these questions is a resounding YES, then today is your very lucky day.

Bunnychon is a new restaurant in Cebu that sells (you guessed it right) bunny or rabbit lechon. Although Bunnychon has only been in operation for a few weeks, the buzz about the new specialty restaurant is growing stronger by the minute.

TheCebuano recently visited the very first Bunnychon store at The Market by Sugbo Mercado along Mantawi Road in Mandaue City to experience the now-famous bunny lechon first-hand. Take a look!

Bunnychone or rabbit lechon is sold at Php900 to Php1000 per piece.

According to the owners of Bunnychon, the idea of cooking rabbit meat and selling it to the public was not their original plan. Originally, their main goal was to find a way to make sure that their organic garden was capable of producing enough produce for their personal consumption.

Their quest for a healthy and thriving organic garden allowed them to research different types of manure and how to safely and properly use them. They ended up studying about rabbit manure, and, eventually, about rabbit meat processing and production.

They quickly realized that raising rabbits was sustainable because although they are low-maintenance, they produce good meat and very useful manure. They also don’t get sick very easily and they can reproduce in such a short period of time. Further research told them that according to Philippine laws, rabbits are categorized as livestock and poultry just like pork, chicken, and beef. Also, they discovered that although all rabbits can be eaten, there are certain breeds of rabbits that are raised specifically for their meat.

With all this information and ideas, they were finally able to start a business that specializes in dishes made from rabbits.

According to the owners, Bunnychon has its own slaughterhouse for the rabbits in their farm. The rabbits used in Bunnychon are killed in a humane way that is PETA-approved.

The items being sold and used in Bunnychon like honey, sweet potato (camote), and black rice, are also from the owners’ very own farm. They buy these crops from their farmers at a fair price which is equal to the market value.

Non-rabbit eaters do not realize that rabbits are actually healthy. They are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. They are also low in sodium, cholesterol, calories, and saturated fats.

Rabbit meat is also very rich in Vitamin B3, B12, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium, and a whole lot more.
